Landmarks in the capital, Des Moines, include the gold-domed, 19th-century State Capitol Building, Pappajohn Sculpture Park and the Des Moines Art Center, noted for its contemporary collections. The city of Cedar Rapids' Museum of Art has paintings by native Iowan Grant Wood.
Also located in Cedar Rapids is the Czech Village historic district which preserves culture from 19th-century immigration. The Amana Colonies, located nearby on the Iowa River, are former German religious communes now containing handicrafts, antiques shops and restaurants. Herbert Hoover, the U.S. president from 1929–1933, is commemorated at a national historic site at his birthplace in West Branch, east of Iowa City.
The storied covered bridges of Madison County are celebrated in a festival each autumn. Every August in Des Moines, the legendary Iowa State Fair presents a huge roster of livestock shows, contests, big-name musicians and butter sculptures.
