Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories and the largest. Located on the Northshore of Great Slave Lake this city is a great mixture of natural wonders and city life.

Yellowknife has grown into a prominent city in Northern Canada since it was founded in 1934 by Yellowknives Dene First Nations. Yellowknife gets its name from the copper tools which were made and traded by the Dene First Nations during the city’s gold mining history. The city was originally named ‘Somba K’e’ by the Dene which translates to ‘Where the money is’ due to the city’s rich gold mining history the city seen further development in the 1990s when diamonds were found nearby.

The best part about the city is the bustling streets filled with trendy shops, local street art and a great selection of local restaurants and cafes. Outside the town there is lots of natural wonders to explore! Go for a hike along The Ingraham Trail stretching 70km east along Yellowknife joining dozens of lakes together and leads to the dazzling Cameron Falls. In the winter months, Yellowknife is the perfect place to spot the magnificent Northern Lights with visibility 240 days of the year!
