Virginia is an Eastern U.S. state, stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, with a long Atlantic coastline. It's one of the 13 original colonies, with historic landmarks including Monticello, founding father Thomas Jefferson’s iconic Charlottesville plantation.

Virginia's capital, Richmond, is home to many Revolutionary and Civil War sites, including St. John's Church, where Patrick Henry famously declared, “Give me liberty or give me death.” Across the Potomac River from Washington, DC, is Arlington National Cemetery, and the tomb of of President John F. Kennedy. Nearby Mount Vernon was George Washington's home. To the south are Virginia Beach, with a long boardwalk and 35 miles of waterfront, and Norfolk, home to a large maritime museum with battleship tours. In the west, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive connect at Shenandoah National Park, a 300-sq.-mile mountainous preserve. The Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg are living-history museums reenacting Colonial and Revolutionary-era life.
