Ketchum is just one mile from the Sun Valley Ski Resort and located on the banks of the meandering Big Wood River within the Bald Mountain at the heart of the central Idaho Rockies. Surrounding peaks such as Bald Mountain soar to 9,200 feet and more. The nearby rugged Sawtooth Mountains are known as the "American Alps". The southern edges of Sawtooth National Forest and Challis National Forest encircle the resort area. Ketchum is about 160 miles (a two-and-a-half-hour drive) west of Boise, the state's capital.
