Lake Powell is located in northern Arizona and stretches up into southern Utah. It's part of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Lake Powell was created in 1963 when the Glen Canyon Dam held back the waters of the Colorado River, forming a vast blue lake surrounded by beautiful sandstone walls. Remarkably, it took 17 years for the lake to fill the canyon to the high-water mark (3700' above sea level), giving America its second largest man-made lake - and a playground like no place else on earth.

Five separate rivers, of varying sizes, feed into and form Lake Powell. These include the Colorado River from Colorado, the Green River from Wyoming, the San Juan River from New Mexico, the Escalante River and Dirty Devil River from Utah.

The sizeable Glen Canyon Dam holds the water for Lake Powell in place. The dam controls the flow of water as a source for several downstream states. Creation of the dam was started in 1957 and Lake Powell did not reach full capacity until 1980. The crest of the dam spans 1,560 feet and rises 710 feet above the Colorado river bedrock, and the lake reaches a depth of over 500 feet.

With comfortable water and air temperatures into the months of October and November, Lake Powell offers year-round recreation opportunities.
