Frontiers North Adventures specialises in wildlife and cultural journeys in Canada’s North, best known for its polar bear tours from Churchill. It runs the official Tundra Buggy, a vehicle built for the rough tundra terrain that takes you into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, where you may spot polar bears from your own window seat. It also operates the Tundra Buggy Lodge at Polar Bear Point, a hotel set out on the tundra where you sleep in a private bunk, enjoy meals from a dedicated chef and team, and may even see the northern lights from the rooftop observation deck.
Polar bear viewing is what Frontiers North is best known for, and it runs in October and November, when the bears gather near Hudson Bay waiting for the sea ice to form. You spend your days aboard the Tundra Buggy, travelling through the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, with a dedicated window seat for every guest. Some journeys add nights at the Tundra Buggy Lodge, where you stay out on the tundra at Polar Bear Point and bears may wander close. Polar Bears International scientists share their research with guests along the way. Sightings can never be guaranteed, but you will be in the right place at the right time.
In July and August, Churchill turns its attention to the water. Hundreds of beluga whales gather in the warm, shallow Churchill River estuary, where they feed and raise their young. Frontiers North’s summer journey, Belugas, Bears and Blooms, takes you out on a guided Zodiac ride and a boat tour to see them, and you can also go kayaking among them. A hydrophone lets you hear their underwater calls, and belugas are known for their curiosity, so they may come close to the boat, though this is never guaranteed. The same journey adds a Tundra Buggy day, where you may see summer polar bears, caribou and arctic foxes, as well as the tundra in bloom. Activity levels are moderate to high, with boat trips and uneven terrain.
February and March offer the best chance of seeing the aurora from Churchill, which sits beneath the Auroral Oval. On Northern Lights and Winter Nights, three of your five nights are dedicated to viewing, each from a different spot away from the town lights. These include a restaurant reached by Tundra Buggy across the frozen Churchill River, a secluded viewing lounge, and a yurt in the boreal forest, all with warm indoor seating and views of the sky outside. Days are for dog sledding, snowshoeing and a guided tour of the town, and winter gear is provided. The lights depend on conditions and cannot be guaranteed, so the group decides together how long to stay out each night.

The lodge sits at Polar Bear Point, on the edge of Hudson Bay. It is laid out rather like a train, with two accommodation units, a lounge car and a dining car linked by outdoor observation decks. You have your own single bunk, with shared washroom facilities, and a dedicated chef and team prepare your meals.
The lounge car has a rooftop observation deck with views in every direction, where you may see the northern lights on a clear night. Evenings bring talks from polar bear scientists and photographers, and bears sometimes wander close to the lodge. The whole lodge is self contained, with no food, water or waste touching the ground.
