Yes, Lake Louise is located in bear country, with both black and grizzly bears found in the area. Stay on marked trails, keep a safe and respectful distance, and follow local safety guidance, which is clearly signposted throughout the park.

Lake Louise typically freezes over by mid-November and remains frozen until late May, transforming into one of Canada’s most magical natural ice skating experiences.

Lake Louise (the lake itself) is just a short distance from Lake Louise Village approximately 5 km (3 miles) away.

The journey takes around 5–10 minutes by car and is not walkable due to being on a main road with no pavements and takes about 1 hour. There are also regular shuttle buses available, especially during peak season, making it easy to travel between the village and the lake.

Fairmont Lake Louise is the only hotel located beside the lake.  

The lake itself is free, but you’ll need a Parks Canada pass to enter Banff National Park.
