The Lodge at Bow Lake

On the shores of Bow Lake, around 30 minutes North of Lake Louise, you will find the Lodge at Bow Lake. Here, where the Icefields Parkway cuts through Banff National Park, a cluster of red roofed timber buildings has stood since 1922. The turquoise water sits still beneath the Crowfoot Glacier, its ice visible from the shoreline on a clear day, while Bow Glacier itself feeds the lake somewhere beyond a fringe of spruce. Inside, the Elkhorn Dining Room keeps its historic character intact, a set four course dinner served each evening beneath timber beams that have seen nearly a century of mountain winters. Rooms are simple and uncluttered, the kind of place where a window seat and a view of the water do most of the work.

Days here move at the pace of the landscape. Trails lead out along the lakeshore towards Bow Glacier Falls, a modest hike that climbs through forest before opening onto a wall of falling water, and in winter the same tracks pack down into a route for snowshoers with Lake Louise Ski Resort not far beyond. A small gallery on site shows local art, and the Hanging Glacier Café handles the quieter hours with coffee and something simple to eat. There is no signal to speak of and little to distract from the glacier scoured peaks pressing in on every side, just water, rock and the sound of wind coming down off the ice.
