Vicki's Eastern Canada Rail Journey

By Vicki

I joined the team at My Canada Trips in 2021, and I love using my knowledge and first-hand experience to educate people on all the possibilities open to them, which will enhance their holiday experience.

Travelling by rail in Eastern Canada takes the stress out of your holiday and allows you to explore in comfort as you visit the main cities. Each destination offers something different, and they are all well connected, meaning your journey will be smooth, rewarding and unforgettable.

During my adventure on VIA Rail, I savoured a unique experience at every stop: charming Montreal, picturesque Quebec City, historic Ottawa, vibrant Toronto and Niagara Falls – one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Every location emphasised what makes Canada so special, and together each city ensured my rail trip was perfect.

Montreal and Quebec City: Quirky shops, historic charm and cobblestone streets

My journey started by spending two nights at the stunning Fairmont in downtown Montreal. It served as a perfect base to explore the city. I wandered through Old Montreal, discovering its charming bars, restaurants, and quirky souvenir shops. Down by the harbour, I took a ride on the Big Wheel, which offered spectacular skyline views that I won’t forget.

One of the highlights was the full-day tour to Quebec City and Montmorency Falls, which was a fantastic way to experience the city if you don't have time to stay for a couple of nights. My guide shared fascinating stories about the history of Quebec City and the iconic Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. I also had some free time to wander on my own, and I fell in love with Quebec City’s cobblestone streets and quaint little shops. It’s truly one of my favourite cities!

Ottawa: A capital filled with striking architecture and local delicacies

I left Montreal and hopped on VIA Rail for a quick 90-minute journey to Ottawa. After arriving in the capital, I enjoyed a leisurely walk around the city, soaking in its beautiful parks and historic landmarks. The next morning, I explored more of Ottawa’s highlights, including the Parliament buildings and striking architecture throughout the city. I took a river cruise with an incredibly knowledgeable guide, learning all about Ottawa’s history. Even if museums aren’t your thing, there are plenty of options worth exploring. The hop-on hop-off bus was also a fantastic way to see the city efficiently. In the evening, I experienced a progressive foodie tour in the ByWard Market area. The guide was fantastic, and I sampled local foods and drinks while learning about the area’s history.

Toronto and Niagara Falls: Unique, unmissable and unforgettable

Leaving Ottawa, I took the VIA Rail train to Toronto, which is vibrant, bustling, and packed with things to see and do. From shopping and dining to sightseeing, there’s something for everyone. After settling in, I prepared for a day trip to Niagara Falls. The guide and driver were excellent, providing detailed insights throughout the day.

I started with a visit to a local winery, followed by the awe-inspiring American Falls. Lunch at the Queen Elizabeth Restaurant gave us incredible views of the Horseshoe Falls, and then we boarded the Hornblower boat tour. Getting up close to the falls was exhilarating. Of course, we got soaked – but it was completely worth it! A rainbow over the falls capped off an unforgettable experience.

We also visited Niagara-on-the-Lake, a quaint town near the falls with charming shops, eateries, and horse-drawn carriages. It’s a completely different pace from the bustling tourist side of Niagara Falls.

Diverse cities offer the perfect taste of Canada

What I loved most about this trip was how distinct each city was. I was treated to Montreal’s European charm, Quebec City’s cobblestone streets, Ottawa’s historic elegance, and Toronto’s modern energy. With so much diversity, history, and culture, this itinerary is perfect for anyone wanting a taste of Canada. I had a fantastic time and can’t wait to return!
