Rocky Mountaineer: Journey through the Clouds

Westbound - Jasper | Kamloops | Vancouver

Eastbound - Vancouver | Kamloops | Jasper

The Journey through the Clouds is one of the most celebrated Rocky Mountaineer routes, taking you on a two-day rail adventure between Vancouver and Jasper through over 500 miles of breathtaking Western Canadian wilderness. With an overnight stop in Kamloops, the route traces the Fraser River through the legendary Hell's Gate, past the thundering Pyramid Falls, and up through Yellowhead Pass to the towering peaks of Jasper National Park.

WESTBOUND

DAY 1 – JASPER TO KAMLOOPS

Begin your Journey Through the Clouds westbound adventure, travelling from Jasper through some of the Canadian Rockies' most awe-inspiring landscapes. Crossing the Yellowhead Pass and descending through the Continental Divide, the scenery unfolds across the sweeping river valleys of the Monashee and Cariboo Mountains. Among the standout Journey Through the Clouds route highlights are the towering Mount Robson, the spectacular Pyramid Falls, and the long, scenic run along the North Thompson River as you approach Kamloops. Overnight in Kamloops (moderate standard accommodation). Breakfast and lunch are served onboard.

DAY 2 – KAMLOOPS TO VANCOUVER

On the second day of your Journey Through the Clouds itinerary, the train heads west towards the Pacific. The scenery shifts dramatically once again – from the arid, canyon-carved Interior, through the steep slopes and rock sheds of the Thompson River, to the thundering waters of Hell's Gate in the Fraser Canyon, before softening into the lush green farmlands of the Fraser Valley and the Coast and Cascade Mountains beyond. Your rail journey concludes on arrival into Vancouver. Breakfast and lunch are served onboard.

EASTBOUND

DAY 1 – VANCOUVER TO KAMLOOPS

The first day of your Vancouver to Jasper adventure eases you in beautifully, rolling through the fertile farmlands of the Fraser Valley before the landscape begins to shift and steepen. As the train climbs beyond Hope, the Fraser River narrows dramatically into one of the Journey Through the Clouds route highlights – the legendary Hell's Gate, where a volume of water roughly three times that of Niagara Falls thunders through a canyon barely 35 metres wide. The scenery continues to evolve as you approach Kamloops, where lush river valleys give way to the sagebrush-covered hills of the BC Interior. Overnight in Kamloops. Breakfast and lunch are served onboard.

DAY 2 – KAMLOOPS TO JASPER

The second day of your Journey Through the Clouds itinerary is where the drama truly peaks. Leaving Kamloops, the train follows the North Thompson River north before slowing for Pyramid Falls, a breathtaking 91.5-metre cascade visible only from the railway. From there, the route climbs over Yellowhead Pass, threading past teal-green glacial lakes toward the mighty Mount Robson. It is that kind of journey: just when you think you've witnessed the most stunning view imaginable, something even more extraordinary appears around the next bend. Your adventure concludes in the charming alpine town of Jasper. Breakfast and lunch are served onboard.
