Originally a railway town, Jasper's unpretentious small-town charm has a timeless appeal. Surrounded by towering mountains, crystalline lakes, and abundant wildlife, no wonder the national park is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jasper is an intimate community that originated as a railway town that just happens to be in the middle of some of the most gorgeous protected wilderness in the world. Over one hundred years ago, Jasper Forest Park first came to be and was named after the popular fur trading post operator, Jasper Hawes. By 1911, the Park saw the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway line reach Mile 112. What was then called the town of Fitzhugh - flourished around the new railway station, and by 1913 the name was changed to Jasper to complement the Park.

For well over a century, visitors coming to Jasper National Park have found beauty beyond imagination.
The town of Jasper is in the heart of Jasper National Park. The park’s shimmering glaciers, abundant wildlife, crystal-clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, deep canyons and evergreen forest — all surrounded by towering mountains — are some of the reasons the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s one of only 15 such sites in Canada. At 11,228 square kilometers (4,335 square miles), Jasper National Park is also Canada's largest park in the Rocky Mountains and the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world.
Jasper offers breathtaking sites and memorable experiences. Adventurers can take advantage of incredible backcountry locations, alpine day hikes, adrenaline pumping mountain biking and great paddling. For a more relaxed pace, take in one of the many scenic drives, picnic amongst majestic peaks, and enjoy unique wildlife viewing.
